This is painting #29 in my robot painting series. The number 29 is the atomic number for Copper. It celebrates love and marriage, namely because my youngest daughter is getting married this year… just after she turns 29. It is also the number of years that passed between when I dated, and when I married my wonderful wife Sharon.
Hidden all over the painting you will find quotes and wisdom about marriage and love. The planet Saturn is positioned to the left of the girl’s head as you look at the painting. To astrologists, and followers of astrology, Saturn brings structure and meaning to our world. Saturn knows the limits of time and matter. Saturn reminds us of our boundaries, our responsibilities, and our commitments. It brings definition to our lives. Saturn makes us aware of the need for self-control and of boundaries and our limits.
Saturn is often associated with our fathers or father/authority figures. In childhood, the discipline, rules, and regulations imposed on us by our authority figures–from parents, teachers, and the like–were not always pleasant, but they actually helped us to understand the world around us. Similarly, Saturn’s lessons actually help us to grow.
To scientists Saturn is the sixth planet from the sun and the second-largest in the solar system, after Jupiter. It is a gaseous giant with an average radius about nine times that of Earth. Saturn is named after the Roman God of Agriculture; its astronomical symbol (♄) represents the god’s sickle. I put it in this painting because of “the ring” that is is best known for.
Venus is written on the woman robot because of the book from the 90s “Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus”. Did you know Venus rotates east to west while all the other planets rotate west to east? Hmmm… Anyway, it also has the slowest rotation period 243 days. Hmmm…
The “Occupy Mars” sticker is not just there to acknowledge the race by SpaceX, Mars One, and a handful of other companies who want to establish a colony on Mars, it is also where I have signed and dated the painting.
The 3D bouquet of silk flowers is dressed up with a rainbow of colored wire to acknowledge the marriage laws adopted by the US in recent years. This is also hinted to in the colors used for Saturn. It may not be your cup of tea, but it is the law of the land, and it is a fact. I paint it as I see it.
The straps across the chest of the woman have seat belt buckles on them with the GM and Chevrolet logos on them. This is because I am honoring my father who spent 31 years building cars for GM, he loved both of my girls to pieces and was the proudest grandfather on the planet. he has since passed and this is my tribute to him and reminder to my daughters of the kind of heart they need to aspire to have. The buckle reads “Buckle up, marriage is not always a smooth ride”.
If you look closely you will notice on the outside ear of the spaceman robot the reflections of many, representing the family he comes from, but on the inside ear closest to the spacewoman, there is only her reflection. and in her ear, only his reflection. This symbolizes leaving your parents and friends and becoming ONE.
